How I can help
I offer flexible, independent support to health and care organisations, whether you need help with a specific piece of work, an experienced extra pair of hands or a fresh perspective on a challenge.
My approach is practical, proportionate and tailored to what you need.
Exploring opportunities
Looking to develop a new service or work with the NHS or wider public sector?
I can help you understand the commissioning landscape, explore where your services might fit, identify opportunities and work through the practical steps needed to take an idea forward.
Preparing for tenders
Planning to bid for a public sector contract and need help getting ready?
I can help you understand the requirements, assess your readiness, identify gaps and prepare for the tender process, giving you a clearer picture of what's needed before committing valuable time and resources.
Reviewing bids and proposals
Want a fresh, independent perspective on your bid or tender response before submitting it?
Drawing on my experience of designing and evaluating tenders, I can review your draft responses, assess how well they address the requirements and provide constructive, practical feedback to help strengthen your submission.
Improving services
Looking to improve an existing service, respond to changing requirements or find better ways of working?
I can help you review what's working well, identify what needs improving, explore options and develop practical, achievable solutions. I can also support you to put agreed changes into action if needed.
Independent critical friend
Sometimes it helps to have an independent perspective when working through a challenge or decision.
I can help you test ideas and approaches, challenge assumptions, explore different options and make sense of complex issues, offering constructive, practical advice to help you move forward.
Additional capacity and project support
Sometimes there simply isn't enough time or capacity to do everything that needs doing.
I can provide flexible strategic or operational support, from specific projects and service development to additional expertise or short-term capacity, working independently or alongside your existing team.
Experience in practice
Every organisation and challenge is different. Here are a few examples of how I've applied my experience to help organisations work through challenges, improve services and deliver practical results.
Supporting difficult decisions
Service review and decommissioning
Led the review, options appraisal and safe closure of an urgent care walk-in service, a politically sensitive project attracting significant local interest and scrutiny.
Gathered and analysed evidence on service use, performance, costs, patient experience and alternative provision, working with stakeholders to inform clear, evidence-based recommendations.
The closure enabled reinvestment in priority services to better meet local needs, with ongoing monitoring demonstrating no adverse impact.
Developing care pathways
Community liver diagnostics
Co-designed and implemented a community FibroScan service, initially developed as a proof of concept for wider adoption.
Worked with liver consultants and GPs to develop an evidence-based referral and management pathway. Successfully piloted in primary care before being scaled up as a commissioned community service.
One of the first direct-access FibroScan pathways in the country, improving patient access and experience while reducing hospital attendances, costs and waiting times.
Testing assumptions
Pharmacy turnaround times in a large acute hospital
Led a rapid improvement project to reduce discharge medication turnaround times and improve patient flow.
Worked with teams to define the problem, map processes, undertake root cause analysis and consider human factors. This revealed that delays were caused by late medication requests rather than pharmacy dispensing times.
By challenging the original assumptions, we identified the underlying cause of delays, enabling teams to focus improvement efforts where they would have the greatest impact.
Embedding strategy into practice
Organisational approach to a learning health system
Co-designed an organisational approach to embed continuous learning, improvement, research, innovation and clinical effectiveness into everyday practice.
Developed a practical toolkit to help staff and teams use data and evidence, identify improvement opportunities, test ideas and apply research to improve services.
The approach was designed to build capability across the workforce, enabling teams to take greater ownership of learning and improvement rather than relying solely on specialist teams.
Creating consistent ways of working
Standardising radiology administration processes
Led work with administration teams across radiology departments to streamline processes and reduce referral-to-appointment times.
Rather than imposing a standard approach, I supported teams to develop their own weighted scoring criteria and collectively assess different ways of working.
This helped overcome resistance to change, build ownership of the agreed solution and establish a consistent approach while retaining flexibility for genuine departmental differences.
Simplifying commissioning processes
Developing a practical commissioning guide
Developed a commissioning guide and supporting resources for an Integrated Care Board, helping staff understand and manage the full commissioning cycle.
Broke down complex processes into manageable stages, using straightforward language, practical examples and links to supporting tools.
The guide became a valued resource for new staff and an aide-memoire for experienced colleagues, also supporting those looking to develop their understanding of commissioning or move into commissioning roles.
I offer flexible support tailored to your needs and budget. Rates start from £60 per hour, or £400 per day.
